Gothic — also called blackletter or fraktur — gives text a dense, medieval texture. The bold variant is the one most people recognise from band logos and metal artwork.

Gothic
Blackletter was the standard book hand across Europe from the twelfth century until Roman type displaced it, and it stayed in everyday German printing until the mid-twentieth century. Unicode encodes it as a mathematical alphabet, which is why the characters survive copy and paste. Bold fraktur has a complete set of letters; the regular weight substitutes a few letterlike symbols.
Where people use it
- Band, label and merch names
- Dark-aesthetic profile headers
- Roleplay and fantasy character names
- Tattoo mock-ups shared as text
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between gothic and old English here?
- They are the same script family — this page features the bold fraktur weight, while the old English page features the lighter one.
- Is blackletter readable at small sizes?
- Barely. Keep it to a few words, and put anything essential in plain text next to it.
- Does gothic text work on Instagram?
- Yes, in bios, captions and comments. Instagram does not filter these characters.
