Kaomoji

Where Western emoticons like :-) are read sideways, kaomoji face you directly, and Japanese input culture turned them into an art form using katakana, box-drawing and rare punctuation as eyes and arms. That is why they feel more expressive than emoji in a text line — and why they paste cleanly anywhere Unicode text is accepted. Every face here is copied as one unit, so the arms never get separated from the head.

Where people use it

  • Caption moods on posts and stories
  • Signature faces at the end of comments

Frequently asked questions

What does kaomoji mean?
From the Japanese kao (face) + moji (character) — literally 'face characters'. They predate emoji by about a decade.
Do kaomoji work on Instagram and TikTok?
Yes. They are plain text, so bios, captions and comments all accept them. Extremely rare characters can box on old phones, so preview first.
Why copy from here instead of typing?
Most kaomoji parts (◕, ᴥ, ツ, ╯) are not on any standard keyboard. One tap copies the complete face.
