Old English
The name is a bit of a misnomer: the style is textura blackletter, not the Old English language, and it reached English printing centuries after Anglo-Saxon was spoken. Newspaper nameplates kept it alive long after body text moved to Roman type, which is why it still signals tradition. Unicode encodes it as mathematical fraktur, complete except for a few letters drawn from the letterlike block.
Where people use it

- Newspaper-masthead parody text
- Tattoo lettering references
- Heritage and vintage brand names
Frequently asked questions
- Is old English the same as gothic?
- Same family, different weight. Old English here is the regular fraktur; the gothic page features the bold one.
- Why do capital letters look so ornate?
- Blackletter capitals were drawn as decorated initials, so they carry far more flourish than the lowercase.
- Does it work on WhatsApp?
- Yes — WhatsApp passes these characters through in messages, group names and your about text.
