Because these are ordinary characters, they survive the trip through message sync, backups and forwarding intact. Group subjects, your about text and contact names all accept them. One caveat: WhatsApp's native asterisk formatting will not apply on top of already-styled characters, so pick one approach per message.

Why doesn't asterisk bold work on styled text?
WhatsApp's formatter looks for plain letters between the markers. Styled characters are not recognised, so the markers stay visible.
Will the recipient see the same style?
Almost always. Very old phones without the right font may show boxes for exotic styles.
